2011 Diary

Blenheim 8th-11th September:
We only had one day back at the yard to get re-packed before leaving for Blenheim with Paddy and Cooly. However by the end of the week we all wished we had stayed at home as Tom had a bad fall on Paddy in the CCI*** resulting in a broken ankle which put an end to our season and an early holiday for the horses but we’ll be back next year aiming for Badminton with Red.

Burghley 1st-4th September:
We arrived on the Tuesday for Red’s first Burghley and his first 4* for two years. He settled in well and just had a light hack later that afternoon. He had dressage late on Thursday and did his best dressage test to date at this level getting 59.7. He had the Friday to rest before XC the following day on Saturday. He jumped a fantastic clear round and followed that with another super effort in the SJ the following day to get one of the few clear rounds of the day.

Firle 27th-28th August:
A fall for Tom on Zeb meant that we had to withdraw the horses competing the following day. Lydia also competed Hurley on the Saturday and did well to get a dressage score of 36 and a clear round sj.

Burnham Beeches 20th-21st August:
It was Zeb and Davids first outing at Burnham Beeches. Zeb remained on his dressage score of 31 and would have won if he wasn’t competing HC. Just the Thing also went well in the ON to come 8th.

Hartpury 11th-14th August:
It was a good weekend at Hartpury with Red finishing in 12th place in the CIC*** his last run before Burghley. He jumped very well to go double clear. Paddy was also in the CIC***. He did well in big arena to get a dressage score of 58.7 but was unlucky to have 1 down sj. The xc proved testing and Paddy had a run out at the double of corners but jumped the rest well.

Aston-Le-Walls 11th August:
It was a quick stop at Aston-Le-Walls on the way to Hartpury for Cooly to run in the OI. He finished in 14th after a good dressage test and a double clear. David Corney drove him back home so we could carry on to Hartpury with Red and Paddy.

Smiths Lawn 2nd August:
The horses had to cope with the very hot weather at Smiths Lawn on Tuesday. Herbie seems to be back at his best coming 5th in the Novice at Smiths Lawn after a good dressage test getting a score of 32 and a very good double clear with only a few xc time penalties which was good considering the ground was very hard. Nelson was also competing in the Novice and he too was clear xc but had 2 down sj. We also had Phoenix and Galient in the BE100. Phoenix produced a 34.5 dressage score, had 1 pole down sj but jumped well to go clear xc. It was Galients last BE100 run before his first Novice at Burnham Beeches in a few weeks time. He got a 38.5 dressage, had 2 down sj and jumped a good clear xc round. It was also Lydia and Hurley's first time at BE100. Thet got a dressage score of 43. had 2 poles down sj and just one stop xc.

Wilton 31st July:
We had Paddy, Denny and Cooly in the Open Intermediate at Wilton on the Sunday. It was a very early start having to leave at 3:30 in the morning. Denny was first to go in the dressage getting a score of 38.6. His jumping continues to improve with a very good double clear meaning he finshed just outside the top 10 in 11th place. Paddy got a dressage score of 34.1 and also jumped well going clear xc and was unlucky to have just the 1 down sj. It was Cooly's first event since his fall at Barbury. He did the dressage getting 38.6 but we decided not to jump him.

Aston-Le-Walls 22nd-23rd July:
We took Red to do his first advanced in two years and Phoenix and Herbie in the Novice. It was Phoenix's first Novice and he did very well to go double clear with a dressage score of 37.0 to finish in 6th place. Herbie also went very well getting a double clear with just 1.2 xc time penalties and a dressage score of 38.0. Red was also well placed coming 12th in the advanced after a dressage of 38 and a very good double clear with just a few xc time penalties.

Brightling Park International 16th-17th July:
Galient did his best dressage test to date getting a score of 28.5 and he continued to do well with a good sj round just having the one pole down and a clear xc to finish in a very good 2nd place. Phoenix was also well placed in the BE100 coming 4th after a 34 dressage, just one pole down sj and another clear xc inside the time. Nelson was 5th in the Novice on the Sunday after a very good double clear and a dressage score of 32.5. Denny continued the good weekend by getting his best result in a CIC** coming 15th. He got a good score of 56.9 after dressage and just had two down sj and was clear xc doing well to get only 14 time penalties on very heavey ground after all the rain.

Tweseldown 11th July:
We ended up just taking Red after the events at Barbury the day before. Red continues to do well with another double clear. He'll be doing the advanced at Aston-Le-Walls in a couple of weeks time.

Barbury International 7th-10th July:
Cooly is recovering well after a bad fall in the water in the CIC*** at Barbury. We were all very happy to have him back home on Tuesday night.

It was a big arena and ocassion for the dressage on Friday and the wind didn't make it easy for the horses to settle and relax. Both Paddy and Cooly got scores in the sixties but do continue to make progress. We had show jumping early on Sunday morning and Paddy did very well to go clear in a tough course on split levels with only 1 time penalty. Cooly also jumped very well and just had the 2 poles down. After Cooly's fall xc we decided not to run Paddy.

Eridge 2nd-3rd July:
Saturday was Phoenix and Galient in the BE100 and Hurley in the BE90. Phoenix finished just outside the top 10 in 11th place after another double clear and a dressage score of 32.5 with just a few jumping time penalties. Galient didn't run xc after a poor sj round. Lydia and Hurley were unfortunately eliminated xc after missing a jump out. Herbie, Tinks and Nelson all went on the Sunday to compete in the Novice. Both Herbie and Nelson got dressage scores in the thirties and a stop xc but Nelson had a good clear sj round with Herbie having just the 2 down. Tinks also had 2 poles down but was again clear xc.

Rackham 26th June:
Phoenix continues to make good progress after his first win of the season in the BE100 at Rackham. He just added a few time penalties to his dressage score of 30 after a double clear. Hopefully he will be moving up to Novice in the near future. Galient got a score of 37 in his dressage test and was unfortunate to have a few down sj and was withdrawn from the xc. It was also Mr Hurley's first event with our new working pupil Lydia since joining the yard. He got a good dressage score of 32.5 he jumped well sj and was unlucky to have one sj and a run out xc.

Salperton 25th June:
It was Reds first run since coming back from an operation on his foot, in the OI not counting last weekend at Longleat. He was very happy to be back competing again and went clear xc and just had 2 down sj. Denny also did very well in the intermediate to finish 4th, his best placing in an intermediate. He got a very good dressage score of 30.9 which is usually his weakest phase and and just added xc time penalties. We also had Paddy and Cooly in the AI as a warm up run for the CIC*** at Barbury in a few weeks. Cooly kept improving his dressage with another score in the thirties. Paddy was unfortunate to get a dressage score of 41 but was getting bothered by the flies. They both had the 1 down sj and were clear xc.

Longleat International 17th-19th June:
The weather caused big problems at Longleat this weekend. We had so much rain they ended cancelling the Novice and Intermediate classes on the Sunday. We took Red for his first event since coming back from injury as well as Denny, Herbie, Monkey and Phoenix. Phoenix ran in the BE100 on the Friday and had the best of the ground before the rain came. He was a bit too excitable in the dressage but still ended up with a score of 34 he then went on to go clear sj and xc just slightly out of control! Herbie and Red were competing in the Novice on Saturday. Herbie got a good dressage score of 33.5 but the very wet ground made the sj tricky and he did well to have just the 1 down. Tom retired him xc as the going was just too bad. We also ended up withdrawing Red after the dressage and Monkey. Denny's intermediate class on the Sunday was cancelled. Hopefully it will be better at Salperton and Rackham next weekend.

Borde Hill 29th-30th May:
It was Rosie's first outing at Borde Hill on the Sunday in the BE90. She got a good dressage score of 31.5. 4 pens. sj and the xc was clear and inside the time to finish on the winning score (if not HC!) Next on the Monday was Nelson, Galient and Phoenix. Phoenix keeps improving and finished in 5th place after a double clear and a good dressage score. Galient was unlucky to have a few down sj but was again clear xc. Nelson was competing in the Novice but unfortunately had 1 down sj and a silly stop at an easy fence xc!

Houghton International 26th-29th May:
Paddy and Cooly were both competing in their first CIC*** at Houghton. A contrasting course from Chatsworth, more technical and twisty we needed a quick thinking and clever as well as a bold horse for this one! It was a third step up in as many Events for Cooly who took to it very well getting a score of 63.2 and is definitely moving in the right direction. Paddy did a very good test for his first 3* of 58.8. They both went clear sj and it was a much more mature round for Cooly compared to Chatsworth with just 4 time penalties. Cooly's fast clear xc round meant a great finish in 10th place. Paddy was also clear xc,despite a unscheduled long route at the water jump which would have cost him 4th place, as only 0.3 seperated 4th and 6th, but we were still very pleased with him and he did very well to finish 6th, and for both obtaining their CCI*** qualifications.

Brigstock International 20th-22nd May:
It wasn't a great weekened at Brigstock. Nelson went double clear in the Novice section but his dressage test was a bit disappointing. It was his first time stabling away from home which didn't go too well. We had to move him to a stable down at the house for the rest of the weekend as he was misbehaving it turned out that there was a mare in the stable behind him. Denny was competing in the CIC** but unfortunately he lost a shoe early on in the sj and was a bit foot sore so he was withdrawn from the xc. Hebie was competing on the Sunday in his first intermediate which started well with him doing a nice dressage test with a score of 31. He had 2 down sj and then we had more bad luck as he knocked a big trakenher fence so Tom pulled him up to be safe. Luckily it was only a small cut on his back leg but sometimes its better to be careful.

Chatsworth International, 13th-15th May:
It was a very successful weekend for Paddy and Cooly in their first advanced and Monkey in his first advanced for a while at Chatsworth. All three had much improved and more relaxed dressage tests on the Saturday to finish with scores in the thirties. Next up was the sj and xc on the Sunday where Paddy jumped a great round but was unlucky to have a pole down. Monkey also had 1 down sj and Cooly had the 3 down. The xc course was well up to height but proved no problem as all three went clear with Paddy going the fastest of them to finish in 7th and Monkey in 13th all that was left was to pack up and start the very long drive back home.

Hambleden International, 7th-8th May:
Emma, Galient and Chester competed in the BE100 on the Saturday. Emma did the best of three finishing just outside the top 10 in 11th place with a 32.5 dressage and a double clear with only a few xc time penalties. Chester did another good dressage test but had 1 down sj. We decided not to run Galient xc as the ground was a bit too hard for him. Got back to the yard and had to repack the horsebox for Nelson and Herbie who were both competing in the Novice on Sunday. Herbie did very well to come 4th with a dressage score of 35.5 and just the 1 down sj. Nelson had a very good clear round sj but as the ground was still quite hard he didn't run xc.

Nurstead Court, 30th April-1st May:
It was a successful weekend for Nelson, Emma, Phoenix, Galient and Chester competing in the BE100 at Nurstead. Sophie came 10th on Emma with a 37 dressage and just a few xc time penalties. Phoenix was also 10th in a different section though was a bit too strong xc. Chester had a good dressage score of 32, one down sj but clear xc finishing in 12th. It was good to have Kevan Watts came to watch Galient who did well to come 14th with a 37.5 dressage, clear xc and just the one down sj. Nelson did the best out of all of them despite a bad start to the day when a mare got loose when I was about to start lungeing him! We thought his dressage test desrved a slightly better score than 36 but he got a doule clear with just 2.4 xc time penalties to finish 6th.

Milton Keynes, 27th March:
Tom took Jane Bramwell’s horse Chester to his first event in the BE90. He did very well to get a dressage score of 30 and a double clear inside the time to put him second.

Burnham Market, 15th-17th March:
We had three horses running at Burnham Market: Tom in his first intermediate and Joey and Cooly in the CIC**. We didn’t get off to great start as Sophie and the kids had to go back home as they all had a stomach bug. We got there just in time for Joey’s trot up and then put them away in the stables until Joey’s dressage later that day. Joey did a very good test to get a score of 49 which put him in third place.

On the Saturday it was Tom’s first Intermediate and he did very well to finish 11th after a dressage score of 32.5 and just time penalties in the sj and xc so we were pleased with him. It was also Cooly’s dressage on the Saturday though he was too tense so only got a score of 61.

Both Joey and Cooly had 1 down sj but were clear xc though they went steady as the ground was hard and we just wanted them to qualify so they picked up time penalties.

Compeigne, 7th-10th April:
We left with Denny and Paddy early Tuesday morning to catch the ferry to France for the CCI** in Compeigne. We had planned to take Joey but didn’t feel he was fit enough. The weather was quite bad in Dover for the crossing so had some difficulty getting on the ferry, ended up driving around the port for some time until they finally let us on. When we got to Compeigne we got the horses settled in to their new stables which luckily were very close to the horseboxes which made it a lot easier. Had the first trot up the next day and both horses passed. The weather was great so felt a bit like a summer holiday at times and Harry and Hugo must have thought they were at the beach playing in the water jump.

Denny had his dressage on the Thursday which is never his greatest phase so got a score of 65.2. Next up was Paddy and although for him he was a lot a calmer he didn’t get the best mark of 64.3. Most of the riders had taken their top 3* and even 4* horses which we felt made it slightly unfair. The xc course was very tough and caused quite a few problems however both Denny and Paddy went clear with just a few time penalties. After xc they moved up from 67th and 69th to 27th and 28th so not a bad day. The rest of the day was spent icing legs ready for the trot up early the next morning.

It was an early start on Sunday for the sj as we had the trot up first which meant plaiting and more icing. Both horses passed the second trot up so it was just the sj left in the afternoon. Denny was up first but the run at Belton the previous week and the tough xc meant he had 5 down however Paddy had a great clear inside the time ending up finishing 18th the best result for a British horse in a very tough competition.

We rushed to try and get to Calais for the 8:30 ferry but unfortunately just missed it so we ended up not getting back to the yard until after midnight. The unpacking could wait until later!

Belton Park, 1st-2nd April:
First up on the Friday was Tom in the Novice and then Cooly, Monkey and Denny in the Intermediate the following day which meant stabling overnight. Tom finished in the top 10 after a 37 dressage and a clear xc round with just 1 down sj. It was an early start on the Saturday even though we stabled close by. Monkey was a bit too lively in the dressage so didn’t get the best score however he made up for it by getting a double clear. Cooly went clear sj and xc again and Denny had just the one down sj but clear xc. Next up for Denny is a CCI** in France along with Paddy.

Somerley Park, 29th March:
Tinks did a much better dressage test than at Aldon but unfortunately had 4 down sj but was clear xc. Monkey had a good dressage and went double clear so will now do an Intermediate at Belton next weekend. Herbie finished just outside the top 10 with a 31 dressage and a clear xc round just outside the time but 2 down sj.

Munstead, 27th March:
It was Emma’s first event of the season. We took her in the trailer to keep Nelson better behaved and a double clear just outside the time meant 12th place for her. Phoenix just had a few sj penalties in his first BE100 of the season but was clear xc. Nelson remained on his dressage score of 31 to finish 6th and Galient only had one down sj and was clear xc.

Great Witchingham, 25th March:
Four intermediates; Paddy, Cooly, Denny and Joey. Cooly and Paddy both had double clears in the OI and with a 35 dressage Paddy finished 8th. Joey and Denny both had sj penalties but a clear xc and good dressage meant Joey finished 12th.

Aldon, 18th March:
A very long drive but a good day with Herbie coming 4th in the Novice after a good dressage and a double clear. It was Monkeys first event since coming back and he did well to go clear xc and have only 1 down sj. Tinks was too tense in her dressage but did manage a clear xc round and only 1 down sj.

Poplar Park, 13th March:
Joey did the best of the three intermediates. He found the xc hard but still managed a clear round and with a good dressage test and only 1 down sj finished 8th. Paddy and Denny both had 1 down sj with Paddy clear xc too.

Tweseldown, 11th March:
Three Novices at Tweseldown; Herbie, Tom and Cooly. Herbie did a good dressage test and went clear xc with only 1 down sj to finish 11th and Tom had a double clear with only a few xc time penalties to come 9th. Cooly also produced another double clear.

Isleham, 5th-6th March:
Saturday was Phoenix and Galient starting the season doing the BE90 and Herbie and Nelson in the BE100. All went clear xc and Herbie went clear sj too to come 12th. On the Sunday Paddy, Joey, Denny, Cooly and Tom all started at Novice. Paddy did very well to come 4th in the ON with Joey 9th and Denny 11th.
